What is Restylane and how does it get rid of wrinkles?
Restylane is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler. Restylane restores fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as laugh and frown lines. It also is used to add volume to thinning lips. Restylane consists of non animal, hyaluronic acid gel, which is a natural substance already present in your body. Once in the skin, Restylane creates volume to provide a smoother contour to the face.

Injecting this natural filler under the undesired skin fold lifts the depression so it matches the surrounding skin. As we age, our lips get thinner losing youthful volume. Restylane allows us to restore the fullness and contour we enjoyed when we were younger.

How is a treatment performed?
During treatment, the crystal-clear Restylane gel is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. Afterwards your clinician will gently massage the area to optimize contouring. Restylane produces volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. When enhancing lips or facial contours, Restylane adds volume and shape to the treated area.

How long will the treatment session take?
Treatment with Restylane is a very quick and easy process. Unlike collagen fillers, a pre-test is not needed; the treatment can be performed immediately. A treatment generally takes 30 to 60 minutes.

What can be treated?
Restylane can be used for smoothing out folds and wrinkles, lip enhancements and shaping facial contours. The most common areas are the glabellar lines (between the eyebrows), the nasolabial folds (from the base of the nose to the angle of the mouth), marionette lines (angled downward from the corners of the mouth), and lips. Very superficial or very deep wrinkles may be difficult to correct. We can also treat sunken eyes to give patients a softer, more appealing look. How long does Restylane last?
In general, the average Restylane treatment lasts 6 months, which is twice as long as collagen fillers. Clinical trials show that Restylane is effective for some patients up to one year after the treatment of wrinkles. However, the duration of treatment often depends on many factors, such as the structure of the skin, lifestyle and age, degree of perfection demanded by the patient and the injection technique. Clinical evidence indicates that follow-up treatments performed prior to complete dissipation of the filler will add to the duration.

Why not use permanent fillers?
While permanent filler last forever, your face and its wrinkles and folds will continue to change. Adjusting to this reality will always require varied amounts and location of fillers to optimally smooth contours.

What should I do prior to my treatment?
Patients should avoid taking aspirin, drugs like ibuprofen or Aleve®, and high dose vitamin E supplements for one week prior to your treatment. This will help minimize bruising at the injection sites.

Does it hurt?
Most people find the injections relatively painless. You should apply a topical anesthetic cream sparingly to the area 30 minutes prior to your procedure. When enhancing the lips, a local anesthetic injection is administered.

Do I need recovery time?
Most Restylane patients go right back to work or continue their regular activities immediately afterwards. However with lip augmentation you may have more noticeable, temporary swelling. Icing the area will lessen this, but you may want to rest at home while the swelling subsides. You should minimize exposure to excess sun, tanning beds, extreme heat or cold until any initial swelling has resolved.

Is Restylane safe?
Yes. Restylane has been used safely worldwide since 1996 in over 1,500,000 patients. Because Restylane is non animal based and fully biocompatible, allergy testing is not required. This virtually eliminates any risk of animal based disease transmission or allergic reaction. The pre filled syringes are individually packaged by the manufacturer and disposed of afterwards. Finally, Restylane is FDA approved.

Are there side effects?
As with any injection, some common reactions might occur which include temporary redness and swelling. Typically this resolves within a few days.

When will I start to see results?
Immediately… Since wrinkles and folds are corrected to match surrounding skin, you’ll see the desired smooth contour at the end of your treatment. Nevertheless, we recommend returning 2 weeks afterwards to evaluate if any touch up is needed to achieve the results you desire.
