What is Cellulite ?
The "mattress" look of the skin from cellulite affects approximately 80% of women of all ages. Cellulite is caused by a combination of distended superficial fat compartments and fibrous bands that tether the skin, which creates unattractive dimpling at points of attachment. Genetics plays a primary role; but so do contributing factors including impairment of microcirculation, fluid retention, reorganization and enlargement of fat cells, and alteration of connective tissues. Cellulite only occurs in areas where fibrous bands are present, such as the buttocks and thighs. Currently no permanent cure exists for cellulite, but many women have found significant improvement with VelaSmooth® treatments.

How does VelaSmooth® improve the appearance of cellulite?
VelaSmooth® is the most effective, non invasive, treatment for cellulite. It combines gentle light and radio frequency energies (ELOSTM) with mechanical rollers and vacuum suction to manipulate the superficial fat tissue layer that contributes to cellulite. The infrared heat from the light and RF energy increase metabolism of this fatty layer and shrinks the size of fat cells. The mechanical rollers and vacuum suction stretch the fibrous bands, dilatedialate blood vessels to increase circulation to the area, as well as massage the skin, breaking up fat cell clusters. Collectively this results in a smoother, less dimpled appearance of the skin.

How does VelaSmooth® compare with endermologie, liposuction, or other cellulite treatments?
While there is no cure for cellulite, VelaSmooth® is currently the most effective modality clinically available to improve the appearance of dimpled skin. Not even invasive liposuction can eradicate cellulite. The addition of RF and infrared light energies with VelaSmooth® easily surpasses endermologie which only offers mechanical components of vacuum suction and rollers included with VelaSmooth®. The multiple energies delivered effectively penetrate 3 10 mm beneath the skin’s surface into this fatty layer.

What is a VelaSmooth® treatment like?
The VelaSmooth® handpiece slowly glides across the skin. The suction pulses feel much like deep tissue massage. It takes about 45 minutes to treat thighs, buttocks, and hips. Tummies can be added too.

Is it painful?
Most patients describe a VelaSmooth® treatment as a warm, massaging sensation. The mechanical rollers and vacuum suction “pull up” the skin so there is gentle stretching of the skin surface as the applicator is passed over the area.

Is VelaSmooth® Safe ?
Treatment is very safe for all skin types I-VI (skin color) and can even be done on tanned skin. Occasionally temporary bruising or rarely crusting occurs, both resolve within a week. Do I need recovery time?
The treated area may appear flushed or pink, occasionally slightly swollen, and may feel warm for several hours after treatment from the heat. This is evidence of improved blood flow to the treated area. You can resume normal activities immediately.

What kind of results can I expect from VelaSmooth® treatment?
A gradual improvement of cellulite should be expected. Smoother skin surface may be evident as early as after 5 treatment sessions. Some but not all patients may also achieve body contouring benefits with a reduction in the circumference of treated areas.
Body fat levels, diet, lifestyle, fluid retention, hormones and genetics all affect the appearance of cellulite. Nevertheless, in clinical trials cellulite was improved from VelaSmooth® treatments without any other lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise.

How frequently do I need treatments?
The initial series consists of 16 treatment sessions—ideally twice a week for 8 weeks. Maintenance treatments are typically done once a month afterwards in order to maintain the results achieved. Each session is between 30 to 60 minutes long, depending on the size of areas treated.

Is there anyone who can’t do VelaSmooth®?
Patients on accutane in past 6 months, or currently taking blood thinners. Those that have poorly controlled diabetes, a light sensitive condition, or are pregnant. Treatment should be postponed if blood clots or skin integrity is broken from a rash or infection in the area. Pacemakers or other implantable electronic devices are also contraindications. Discontinue aspirin or Motrin® like medications to decrease risk of bruising.
